The President, H.E. Pratibha Devi Singh Patel, paid an incognito visit to ancient Bhairo temple at Old Fort in New Delhi recently. The legend has it that it was built by Pandavs during Mahabharat days.
Her Defence escort and bodyguards also came in a low key. Her car was a worn out model from the President's Estate and no sirens or other fanfare was applied.
The President was accompanied by her family and they prayed quietly - and left the premises as quietly as they entered.
The President's quiet visit had a salutary effect, though. A plot of abandoned land adjusant to the temple, generally used as toilet by the local inhabitants, was removed and a mini garden was built on it.
The Municipality also woke up late and parked two (male and female) toilet buses by the temple premises, perhaps fearing the President might return again.
Pandit Dina Nath, the head priest of the temple, told this reporter that the main problem for the temple is created by the monsoons. All the water from Raisina Hill, where the President's Estate is, and India Gate gets collected in the Old Fort moat and inundates the temple.
The Archaeological Department perhaps cannot change the moat's structure fo historic reasons and allow the water to flow towards river Jamuna.
Whatever the reasons are, the ultimate sufferers are the devotees and the temple, where monsoon water collects and creates problems.
